WHISPERX GUIDE

WhisperX vs Whisper: what changes in the workflow?

WhisperX builds a broader transcription pipeline around speech recognition. Its additional stages are most useful when your output needs timing and speaker information.

Speech recognition answers “what was said?”

Whisper is the underlying speech recognition family. It predicts text from audio. Recognition errors still matter when you use WhisperX: adding an alignment stage cannot turn a wrongly recognized name into the correct name. Review the words before relying on the transcript.

Alignment connects words to the recording

WhisperX adds a language dependent alignment step to estimate where recognized words belong in the audio. That is useful for navigation and downstream subtitle work. Some words cannot be aligned reliably, and changing the text later does not automatically regenerate timing.

Diarization adds speaker groups

An optional diarization stage groups voice turns, then associates labels with the transcript. Labels such as Speaker 1 are not personal identities. Similar voices and overlapping conversation can cause mistakes, so a labeled interview still needs review.

Choose according to the output you need

If you only need rough reading text, additional processing stages may be unnecessary. If you need word data, transcript navigation, or labeled conversations, a WhisperX pipeline can be a better fit. Your actual result depends on the model, input language, recording quality, and runtime configuration.

  • Readable draft: inspect speech recognition quality.
  • Timing data: inspect alignment coverage and missing times.
  • Interview transcript: inspect speaker assignments.
  • Subtitles: test the exported file with the matching media.

Treat benchmarks as configuration specific

A published runtime or error rate belongs to the exact hardware, data, and settings used in that test. It is not a promise for your recording. Compare outputs on the same file and record the model configuration when choosing a workflow.
